Sluggishness of the bowels and constipation are among the most common digestive problems in western industrialised nations. About 15% of the adult population suffers from difficulties with bowel movements, which can be accompanied by unpleasant symptoms such as bloating and flatulence. These complaints often increase with age. Women are more often affected by irregular digestion.
A combination of sorbitol and figs can be used to regulate stools in cases of a tendency to constipation as well as constipation caused by changes in lifestyle or eating habits (e.g. when bedridden or travelling) or in conditions where easy bowel movements are desirable (e.g. haemorrhoids).
Occasional constipation
There are many reasons for occasional constipation.
- Lack of dietary fibre:
A low-fibre diet is a common cause of constipation. Dietary fibres are indigestible food components that add volume to the stool and promote intestinal movement. - Dehydration:
Insufficient fluid intake can also lead to constipation. Water plays an important role in maintaining a soft stool consistency. - Lack of physical activity:
A sedentary lifestyle and lack of exercise can promote constipation. Physical activity stimulates the intestinal muscles and aids digestion. - Side effects of medication: Many painkillers (e.g. opioids), antidepressants, antacids or iron supplements can cause constipation.
- Travel or change of routine:
A change in daily routine such as travelling can lead to constipation. The body may need time to adapt to new environments or routines. - Stress:
Chronic stress can affect the digestive tract and lead to changes in the bowel, including constipation.
